Transport Workers Endorse Durrance For
Congress
Cite Challenger’s Commitment To Working Class Families
FORT
WORTH—Air Transport Local 567 of the Transport Worker’s
Union of America this week endorsed Neil Durrance for Congress
from Texas’ 26th Congressional District.
“Neil Durrance
will provide the kind of leadership working class families need
in Washington,” said Larry Pike, President of Local 567. “Congressman
Michael Burgess has spent his years in Congress looking out for
big business while ignoring the needs of working class families
in North Texas,” Pike said.
Union officials
said Burgess was out of touch with the needs of North Texas families,
and cited several votes the incumbent Congressman has cast as being
inconsistent with the needs of North Texas families.
“Michael
Burgess voted against raising the minimum wage, against extending
unemployment benefits for working families, and against reforms
to help protect workers’ pensions,” said Gary Moffitt, Legislative
Director of Local 567. “When working families need something from
Michael Burgess, the answer is always the same—‘no,’” Moffitt said.
Durrance
said he was proud to accept Local 567’s endorsement, noting the
importance of the air transport workers to the economy in North
Texas. “The men and women of Local 567 are key to keeping the planes
flying over North Texas. Air travel and DFW Airport are vital to
the North Texas economy, and these men and women deserve good paying
jobs, secure pensions, and fair treatment from the airlines,” Durrance
said.
“When I’m
your Congressman, I’ll be a representative who fights for working
men and women across North Texas. The era of just saying ‘no’ to
working families in North Texas will end when I take office,” Durrance
said.

Court Decision Upholds New Rules For Rail and Aviation Union Elections
WASHINGTON, DC – Edward Wytkind, president of the Transportation
Trades Department, AFL-CIO, issued the following statement today
in response to a decision in the United States District Court for
the District of Columbia, rejecting the Air Transport Association’s
attempt to overturn new National Mediation Board (NMB) rules governing
union elections:
“With today’s court decision, tens of thousands of airline and
rail workers are a step closer to pursuing the power of collective
bargaining under fairer union election rules.
“The deck has been stacked against workers for too long with many
union elections being invalidated by unfair rules that required
super majority participation – a standard found nowhere else in
our democracy. The new rules put an end to the practice of counting
all non-voting employees as ‘no’ votes.
“We look forward to the new NMB rules going into effect without
further delay.”
